News

Hey everybody! Thanks for continuing to visit our site while we’ve been off getting married and other crazy business. Fear not! We’re back at full strength again and ready to roll with our one-post-a-day goal. For the first one, though, we’d better catch up on some news!

First off, near and dear to our heart, those rascals at the Safe Amplification Site Society are throwing another one of their must-see fundraisers at Little Mountain on January 9th, 2010. That’s a way’s off, but maybe one of your New Year’s Resolutions will be to see more shows next year! And what better way to start off the year than by seeing ok vancouver ok, The Rain and The Sidewalk, Dirty Beaches (recently relocated from Montreal to Vancouver), Kidnap Kids! and Commander Riker. Now that’s a line-up!

Speaking of Safe Amp (which we always are), rumour has it that they’ve been given the official thumbs up from punk rock legend and general all-around good guy Joe Kiethley from a local band who did PRETTY WELL FOR THEMSELVES called D.O.A. “This initiative – this Safe Amp – I think it’s a great idea! … A space like that is incredibly important.” Damn straight Joe!

Secondly, on MUCH SHORTER NOTICE, Shipyards, No L.A. Kill, and Boogie Monster are throwing a little shindig tomorrow (December 4th, 8:00pm) at Zoo Zhop (223 Main Street). Perhaps you are the kind of person who would enjoy an evening of musical shenannigans for the low, low price of five bucks? I know you are!

Thirdly, our pals Weathered Pines have their first LP The Sky Between the Buildings (Dejlig Records) in their hot little hands and are hoping to sell you one at their release party on January 25th at the Biltmore. Special guest: Dylan Thomas.

Fourthly, Vapid’s debut LP Practically Dead has been released! Holy crackers! You can head over to the Nominal Records website to order it, or wander into any of the independent records stores (Scratch and Zulu, for sure) and ask ‘em for it! Look for a review soon, as we’ve GENEROUSLY BRIBED Sean for a sneak preview!

And finally (because I have to go make some dinner) Santa’s little helpers over at the Tight Solid workshop have uploaded a rough edit of a new song, appropriately titled “I Hate Christmas”. Check it out!

Safe Amplification Site Society Presents…Shows Galore!

News, Safe Amp November 19th, 2009

Safe Amp

Hey everybody! Sean and Caitlin from Unreliable Narrator contacted us last night to let us know that the Safe Amplificiation Site Society has a couple of great shows coming up. Check it out!

First, Safe Amp presents Unreliable Narrator + PrOphecy Sun + Jeanette Stewart (from Saskatoon) at Cafe Deux Soleils (2096 Commercial Drive) on Friday, November 20th ($5, all ages, 8pm).

Second, we’re throwing a fundraiser for Safe Amp on Friday, November 27th at The Woods (7 West 2nd) with Bad Fate + Flash Palace + Mt. Royal (Medicine Hat/Victoria) + Half Chinese + The Nihilist Party ($5 – $10 sliding scale, all ages, 7:30pm).

And last but not least, we’re hosting another Safe Amp fundraiser at Blim (197 E 17th) on December 12th with Fanshaw + The Lost Lovers Brigade + Sajia + Bleating Hearts + Friendship and the Fawn ($5 – $10 sliding scale, all ages, 7:30pm).

Just a quick note from yer pals at The Aural Kinetic:

The not-for-profit Safe Amplification Site Society means a lot to us because in a city determined to wrecking-ball every small independent all-ages venue, the Safe Amp kids don’t just point out the problems, they actively work to create viable solutions. So if you have a bit of free time on your hands, stop by their website and see what they’re all about. If you wish, you can make a small (or large!) donation. Even better still, attend a meeting or two and consider joining the crew. Everyone has unique talents that can help this super-positive grass roots movement.

Thanks!

Chris-a-Riffic / Rose Melberg Benefit Show!

Safe Amp, Upcoming Show November 5th, 2009

Chris-A-Riffic & Rose Melberg

We’re a big fan of benefit shows here at The Aural Kinetic. You get to see great bands and good causes get some funding. What’s not to like? So when we heard that local wonderkids Chris-a-Riffic and Rose Melberg were planning a benefit for a injured friend and his cat (Medical bills! Boo!) we were all over THAT PLAN. The show is being put on by the Safe Amplification Site Society and is being recorded by Geographing Records for future release.

For more information on the show, please check out the Facebook page.

Safe Amp Site Society

For those of us who still read newsprint, there’s a great big article on our friends at the Safe Amplification Site Society in this week’s Vancouver Courier. You can also click here to read it online with all the pictures and whatnot. We’ve also reprinted the text (after the jump) in case the article ever gets taken down. Go Safe Amp kids! You guys are awesome!

Support the Safe Amplification Society!

Safe Amplification Site Society

From their site: The Safe Amplification Site Society is a non-profit society dedicated to establishing a permanent all-ages space for music and other arts events in Vancouver. This new space will be financially sustainable and legal in every way. It will be alcohol and drug free, and will be available for any person to organize any kind of event, free of charge. Admission costs for all events at the space will be kept affordable: usually five dollars or less.

Members of the Safe Amplification Site Society also organize music and arts events at other existing spaces in Vancouver. Any member can organize an event under the Society’s name, provided it is legal, affordable and accessible to people of all ages.

We are currently raising money and community support in order to make our permanent venue become a reality. If you would like to get involved, please don’t be shy! Become a member, donate money, be our friend (on MySpace, Facebook, or in real life), and tell everyone you know about this project and why it’s so urgently needed in Vancouver.
