In a nasty little piece of deja vu, Vancouver’s by-law dogs have decided to pick on yet another independent music venue. Here’s a quick run-down on the venue in question Little Mountain Studios.
Little Mountain Gallery was established April 7th, 2006. Built in 1930, 195 east 26th Avenue was home to Curly’s Garage. In the decades to follow it has been a sheet metal shop, a plumbing and heating outlet, a soda pop bottle depot, and lastly, South Seas Meats Ltd. Over the past nine years however it has been home to the Arts. Located just west off of Main Street, Little Mountain Gallery is dedicated to its neighborhood, and to keeping the dream alive.
Here’s a recent press release on the recent developments and, more importantly, a fast and easy way for you to help throw a wrench in the works.
Hi friends,
Our beloved Little Mountain Gallery, the city’s only affordable, all ages, DIY performing arts venue is feeling the heat from the City of Vancouver’s bylaw enforcement.
Last week they were visited by a City Official who deemed them to be operating in violation of their license (they are not zoned or licensed for live performance). LMG was told that the City would be issuing them some sort of notice this week. While it remains unclear what exactly this notice will demand it is quite likely to be a cease and desist order.
Ehren, Nathan and Sean have called an emergency meeting with Councilor Heather Deal on Thursday to try and see what can be done to save LMG… and they need your help!
They are planning to present Heather Deal with as many letters of support as possible from people who use the space. Please submit a letter addressed to Councilor Deal to littlemountaingallery@gmail.com no later than Wednesday, explaining why Vancouver’s art scene cannot afford to lose another venue.
It is worth mentioning that Heather Deal is our closest ally at City Hall and she is doing great work with the regulatory review that is seeking to change our archaic bylaws. We should all be outraged, and that outrage should be expressed t…o Councilor Deal, not directed at her.
The Safe Amplification Site Society is, first and foremost, about legalizing music in this city and creating sustainable spaces for grassroots cultural production. This is something we can all do to help further these goals.
Please help spread the word!
Love,
SASS
So there you have it! Let’s get on it kids!
